Mathematics Day

at George Hicks High School

February 28, 2003 was designated Mathematics Day in the Cayman Islands by the Chief Education Officer. The theme for the day was "500 Years of Mathematics" in keeping with the Quincentennial celebrations currently being observed in the Cayman Islands.

At GHHS a number of activities took place to celebrate this day:

A display featuring -

  • 500 years of Mathematics in the Cayman Islands

  • Men in Mathematics

  • Mathematics of yesteryear around the world

  • Mathematics Challenge

was mounted in the Mathematics Quadrangle, a shady area in the Mathematics Block.

A Year 7 quiz between two mixed ability teams from the Saturn /Neptune half of that year group was held during the first period of the day.

  1. A whole school quiz based on the 500 Years of Mathematics display took place throughout the day.

  1. A Mathematics Treasure Hunt was held at lunch time.

  1. A lecture session on the use of Mathematics in the Workplace, featuring a number of parents was held for some of the Year 9 students.

  1. And finally in all other mathematics class teachers planned activities that showed how Mathematics can be fun and challenging.

Students participated eagerly in the Mathematics Day, some wearing the special Mathematics tee shirt produced for that day. The day was a roaring success!
