Overview
Home Economics offers our students the opportunity to
develop a wide range of skills and competencies that will prepare them for
making a contribution to life and work in a technological society.
In teaching Home Economics we aim to educate the pupils
about the theory and practical application of knowledge, skills and
understanding.
Students in Grade 7 attend the Department for a double
period every week. The unit of work is based on 6 lessons.
Students in Grade 8 attend the Department for two double
periods and two single periods in a ten-day cycle. The unit of work is based on
approximately 12 lessons.
Students in Grade 9 attend the Department for 3 double
periods in a ten-day cycle. The unit of work is based on approximately 12
lessons.

YEAR 7 |
A basic course design to introduce students to Food and Nutrition and prepare the ground work for further studies. |

YEAR 8 |
This course is designed to teach students the value of various cultures and to prepare a meal from the selected countries. |

To teach an awareness of the various cultures and how they determine the food we eat in the following countries: Mexico, China, Caribbean, Italy, Great Britain, India. |

YEAR 9 |
This course is designed to teach students to plan healthy meals. |

YEAR 7 |
Our aim is to stimulate an interest in an appreciation for textiles and craft based activities in the home. This will be achieved through a process approach where the emphasis is on independent thinking and the development of skills, which will be developed as the student progresses through the course. |

SCHEME OF WORK |
This unit introduces basic design and realization skills through production of simple articles for use the home. It builds on and reinforces basic skills at Key Stage 1 and 2. |

This unit of work allows pupils to generate ideas by collecting and using information. It also exposes them to working with a variety of materials. Emphasis will be placed on accuracy whilst paying attention to the quality, finish and function. YEAR 8 |
This course further develops skills taught in the first year of Key Stage 3. Progression will take place in two areas: Skill development and response to a design brief. Pupils will be encouraged to take more responsibility for organizing and managing their work. Their response to the design brief will challenge them to evaluate and meet user needs. The unit of work will require them to explore and increase their awareness of textiles. |

YEAR 9 |
This course consolidates the skills taught in the first two years of Key Stage 3 and introduces complexity to previously learned skills. This will provide a firm foundation for the transition to Key Stage 4 and studies at examination level. Pupils will be encouraged to develop independence through their application of skills to meet the constraints of the design brief to reach a set of goals. In doing so they will gain a sense of personal achievement. Pupils will be encouraged to evaluate their own work in terms of functionality and aesthetics and suggest improvements that may be incorporated into future designs. |
