Syllabus for English Language and Literature
The English program at George Hicks is child-centered and literature-based, and follows a thematic/project approach. The program is designed to provide our students with experiences that will help them to develop the skills and attitudes necessary to become effective speakers, listeners, readers and writers. It will also provide a solid foundation for continued development at the upper secondary level of schooling.
The program operates on the principle that all students should be challenged to maximize their individual potential, have equal access to the Department’s resources and be exposed to its high expectations. Therefore, students in all sets are exposed to the same or similar units of work.
ObjectivesThe objectives for English have been divided into the categories of Speaking and Listening Skills, Reading Skills, Writing Skills (including Research Skills). All students should be given the opportunity to acquire all skills, as they move from years 7-9. However, it should be recognized that levels of achievement will vary according to individual and developmental differences.
